The Former Sansho Bank
The Former Sansho Bank
The Former Sansho Bank was built by the former Saga Clan in 1882 as a rice exchange, which acted much like a bank with rice dealers holding the shares. In 1885 it was changed into an official bank, and although it seemed to be doing well, the business gradually declined until it closed in 1893. After the bank’s closure it was purchased and became a clinic until 1976, after which it was used as a private residence.
The structure’s exterior is characterized a mukuri※1 style yane※2 roof and copper plated walls for to prevent fires. The interior features have been kept as they were at that time, including the main atrium, hidden staircase, and plaster decorations around the chandelier.
It is a curious building which on one hand has adopted a traditional※3 style, and at the same time uses a spacial design quite suitable for a bank.
In 1998 the building and land was purchased by Saga City.
It was designated an Important Cultural Property of Saga City in May of 1999.
